So this February, I finally visited Shimla after having it on my travel list for the longest time. This 3 days in Shimla itinerary was planned as a relaxed 3-night family getaway, nothing rushed, just slow mountain vibes. Since it was my first time visiting Himachal, Shimla felt like the perfect destination for an easy, peaceful introduction to hill travel.
How We Got There (aka Train + Taxi Combo)
We took a train from Ahmedabad to Chandigarh—yes, a full 24-hour journey (classic Indian family travel starter pack). But honestly, it was smooth. Once we reached Chandigarh, we hired a cab to Shimla for just ₹2000 and it took around 3 hours. Super comfy and scenic route!
Initially, we wanted to experience the Kalka–Shimla toy train too, but since it needs advance booking, we had to skip it this time. You can check train schedules and availability on the official railway booking website.
Overall, reaching Shimla is quite convenient and works perfectly if you’re planning a relaxed 3 days in Shimla itinerary from cities like Ahmedabad or nearby states.
Where We Stayed
We booked just the first night’s hotel in advance and figured the rest later. Stayed at Hotel Rock Sea—right on Mall Road, so location-wise it was perfect. Easy access to all touristy spots and shopping scenes. The hotel was neat, service was good, and overall totally worth it.
Best Time to Visit Shimla for a 3 Days Itinerary
We went in early Feb, hoping for snow… but well, nature had other plans. No snowfall during our stay, but the weather was still very enjoyable—cold, crisp air, perfect for long walks. If you’re someone who loves winter without turning into a snowman, Feb is actually a great time to go.
Also—pack wisely. Walking is a lottt, so please skip the fancy heels. I had packed one pair of sports shoes and thank God I did. My other pair (with heels) was just sitting in the bag looking cute but totally useless.
Since we had limited time, we planned our sightseeing carefully to make the most of our 3 days in Shimla itinerary without rushing.
Kufri, Jakhoo Temple & Mall Road Madness
Let’s start with Kufri—it’s around 15-16 km from Shimla and easily doable as a half-day or one-day trip. We got a cab for just ₹800. There are plenty of snow activities up there during peak season like skiing, tube sliding, yak rides, horse rides, etc. But since there was no snow during our visit, most of it was closed. Still, the vibe was nice for a stroll and some snacks. Oh, and fun fact—I wore a traditional Himachali dress on the way to Kufri and did a little photoshoot/video session. Felt like a total pahadi soul!
Next up, Jakhoo Temple—definitely a must-visit, not just for the view but for the whole experience. And honestly, I don’t know how, but I always end up finding a temple wherever I go—it’s like my travel ritual. There are two ways to reach:
One is the Jakhoo ropeway, which you can catch near the Ridge/Mall Road. It’s scenic and smooth and honestly fun for people who want the views without walking.
Second is the trekking route, which we took. It’s beginner level, not very hard, and takes you through peaceful foresty lanes. The temple has a giant Hanumanji statue and such calming vibes… but also, a warning: so many monkeys. One even ran off with a guy’s shoes. True story. 😅
And now—Mall Road. Of course. Shimla’s heartbeat. It’s a vehicle-free zone and the best place to hang out, shop, eat, and people-watch. It’s not just local shops; there are plenty of branded stores, cute cafés, bakeries, and even high-end stuff if you’re into that. I loved just strolling there in the evenings—lights, street food, some good ol’ window shopping and lots of photo ops.

Shimla Foodie Diaries
Let me tell you—Shimla food did not disappoint. Here are some absolute bangers:
- Sweet halwa at Nalini Restaurant, Mall Road – hot and yum!
- Chhole kulche at Sharma Chaat Shop, Lower Bazar – BEST.
- Desi Urban Chai – I didn’t try it but everyone with me was raving about it like it’s the chai of the decade.
- Roadside burger at Lakkar Bazar – way better than expected!
- Punjabi food, gulab jamun, and a lot more—basically we ate a lot and enjoyed everything.
Momos? Meh. Not a big fan personally, so they were just okay for me
Shimla Local Vibes & Views – Must-See Spots in 3 Days
If I had to describe Shimla in one line—it’s like a desi version of an old-school European town. I loved the vintage architecture… those colonial-style buildings, beautiful details, and the whole atmosphere felt so aesthetic.
Also, I have to say—Shimla locals have great dressing sense! Stylish, well-dressed, super helpful, and you can tell the city is educated and developed, even though it’s in the hills.
And guess what? Shimla is really clean. Mall Road is a no-vehicle zone, so the air feels fresh, and the whole place just has this peaceful, slow pace that makes you want to pause and breathe.
Hill stations like Shimla are incredibly beautiful, but tourism and rapid development are slowly changing mountain destinations. I’ve spoken more about this in my blog on how convenience is impacting our hill ecosystems.
Shopping in Shimla – Local Markets in Your 3 Days Itinerary
Of course, I shopped (I’m a girl, okay? 😋). Mall Road and especially Lower Bazar are amazing for local shopping. I could’ve spent an entire day there easily.
And the night view of Shimla? Ufff. All those twinkling lights on the hills—looked like stars came down for a party. Loved it.
Extra Info & Tips
If you’re planning a 3 days in Shimla itinerary, here are a few practical things that will make your trip smoother.
- If you have an extra day, you can plan a taxi trip to Narkanda or Chail. We skipped them due to no snow but heard they’re lovely during the season.
- Kufri cab cost us only ₹800, so day trips are quite budget-friendly.
- Give Shimla at least 2 days to feel it properly.
- If you love photography—Christ Church and Kufri are your go-to spots.
- Definitely a great place for families and couples. For solo travellers too, if you’re into chill vibes.
Just a Few Last Things…
Shimla gave me exactly what I needed—a peaceful break with family, beautiful weather, tasty food, and moments that will stay with me for long. Like I always say, jitna explore kiya, utna bhi kaafi laga. And honestly, I’m already looking forward to visiting Himachal again—maybe this time places like Manali, Kaza, or Spiti Valley.
