A Spiritual OM Shaped Island – Omkareshwar

Shri Omkareshwar is a Hindu temple devoted to Lord Shiva. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga, situated on the island of Mandhata, on the banks of the River Narmada. The island of Omkareshwar is formed naturally as OM, the holy Hindu symbol.

The Narmada is a Sanskrit word meaning the “River of pleasure.”

It’s a 1,312 km long river that arises from Amarkantak Plateau in the Madhya Pradesh state and meets the Arabian sea near Bharuch, Gujarat.

Its a lifeline of Madhyapradesh and forms a traditional boundary between north and south India

How To Reach Omkareshwar From Indore:

Distance between Omkareshwar and Indore is around 80km, and you’ll get cabs or taxis readily. Rates are about 10–12 / km. You’ll also get frequent busses from Sarwate bus station, Indore. The route is hilly and full of scenic beauty.

You can get the train from Omkareshwar to Indore. Omkareshwar Jyotirling nearest railway station is the Omkareshwar road railway station, in Khandwa district. It’s a meter gauge line, and it takes about 3.5 hours, so the best option would be a bus or a taxi.

My Trip To Omkareshwar Jyotirling:

Before 2-3 months, I visited Omkareshwar with my family. We took the flight from Ahmedabad to Indore. We reached Indore around 2:00 p.m. and went to the Sarwate bus station by auto. We took a bus to Omkareshwar, and we arrived there around 5:00 p.m.

We went to our prebooked hotel – Shri Radhe Krishna Resort. There are so many hotels near omkareshwar. But if you are searching for the hotels in omkareshwar near the temple, then this is the best option.

We went to the temple the next day early in the morning. In the afternoon, we hired a personal boat for a parikrama of Omkareshwar, we took a holy bath, and did some street shopping. The next day, we visited the Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, explored the local places, and took a bus to Indore, and then the overnight train to Ahmedabad.

  • Parikrama of the Omkareshwar – Take a Parikrama across the island if you’re there, as it’s believed to be highly religious, and you will feel peace and happiness there. It takes around 2 hours to complete the Parikrama in the boat.
